The Story of Civilization – Volume I – The Ancient World
COMPANY
TAN HOMESCHOOL
OVERVIEW
TAN Homeschool has done it again. If you liked The Story of the Bible, you will instantly recognize the same great format with The Story of Civilization. Slated to be released in four volumes, one each year, with the first being released June 1, 2016, this series is going to be a must-have in your family’s homeschool teaching arsenal. Similar to The Story of the Bible, you will receive a wide range of materials, covering first grade all the way up through eighth grade.
Look, you know your kids best – and TAN Homeschool recognizes that many families need not just affordability, but versatility and the ability to customize the material for each child, making the experience not just unique, but suited for your child’s specific needs. As a homeschooling mom of six, five of whom are still schooling – 9th, 5th, 2nd, kindergarten and preschool, I can’t tell you how excited I am to have this set for my kiddos. What I loved most about the style of writing is the storybook format. The reader is completely engaged by being placed in the midst of the story. The language used is wonderfully descriptive and pulls students in.
You’ll receive the textbook, test book* and a card with a digital code to access the video lectures online. Take note that the this series will not include DVDs shipped to your house, but instead you will be granted access to the lectures online, making it easy to locate. These three items are targeted for middle schoolers.
Similar to The Story of the Bible, the activity book and teacher’s manual** are geared toward elementary students – grades 1-4. Note: the activity book contains oral exercises that are not found in the teacher’s manual. At the time of this review, TAN Homeschool is in pre-order mode ONLY. All products will be available at the beginning of June and available for shipment then.

REASON FOR PRODUCT
TAN Homeschool wanted to create this history series because they saw there was a need for Catholic homeschooling families. So many of them were either using outdated and archaic manuscripts written for children in the 1930’s, or they were using Protestant manuscripts that painted the Catholic Church in a negative light, or at least ignored the Church’s contribution to history. TAN Homeschool set out to make a fun and exciting book that would be faithful to the Church because they knew there were so many families hoping for such a book.
Pulled from the product description page:
Children should not just read about history, they should live it. In The Story of Civilization, the ancient stories that have shaped humanity come alive like never before. Author Phillip Campbell uses his historical expertise and story-telling ability together in tandem to present the content in a fresh and thrilling way.
The Story of Civilization reflects a new emphasis in presenting the history of the world as a thrilling and compelling narrative. Within each chapter, children will encounter short stories that place them directly in the shoes of historical figures, both famous and ordinary, as they live through legendary battles and invasions, philosophical debates, the construction of architectural wonders, the discovery of new inventions and sciences, and the exploration of the world.
Volume I, The Ancient World, begins the journey, covering the time periods from the dawn of history and the early nomads, to the conversion of Emperor Constantine. Children will learn what life was like in the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Persia, Greece, Rome, and more, as well as learn the Old Testament stories of the Israelites and the coming of Christ.
The strength of the content lies not only in the storybook delivery of it, but also in the way it presents history through the faithful prism of the Church. Have you always wanted your children to learn about world history from a Catholic perspective? Here, you’ll have the trusted resource you’ve always wanted.

THE RULES
CONTEST IS CLOSED AND OUR WINNER IS
Jeanie Deters
Congratulations, Jeanie!
I would really like to win The Story of Civilization because our family tried a different, very-popular-amongst-homeschoolers history program and became disappointed at the omission of our Catholic history. We are really excited to learn history with SOC!
I would LOVE to win “The Story of Civilization”! As a homeschooling mother of seven, I love to be able to combine multiple children for history. I have used Story Of The World and enjoyed it but I would love a curriculum that is solidly Catholic.
1. I posted this review on the FB group Catholic, Military, and Homeschooling.
2. I have used all the Story of the World books and have long wished for a Catholic version. I definitely plan to get Story of Civilization.
Optional: I bought the Story of the Bible CDs to listen to in the car, so children of all reading levels can listen, as well as Mom and Dad! We like to make productive use of driving time.
Will they add a section for high school eventually or is there a way to add highschool to what is offered?
The material really is suited for middle school, so I would say any high schooler just coming to learn the Catholic Faith, this would also be a good resource, but if your children have been well catechized to this point, the material may be somewhat remedial at the high school level. Great question, though! I do hope a high school version is in the works!
Thank you!
1. Shared with my local Catholic homeschool group.
2. I love how SOTW is written, but it has always bothered me that it has a Protestant slant. I would love to use this with my 6 kids.
Shared in our Catholic co-OP group. I would love to win this to have a great history program for our homeschooling family!
LOVE the classical model of homeschooling! We have been using RC History as a family for 5 years and just began using it in our co-op setting. I have always envied SOTW format and wished there was a comparable version incorporating the Catholic faith. I’m drooling over this curriculum! Sharing this on my personal FB page, as well as our homeschool co-op website and FB page.
We have The Story of the Bible (Old and New Testament) and really are enjoying it. I’m planning on using The Story of Civilization already, it would be great to win it! 🙂

1. Shared on Facebook!
2. Would love to use this. Used Story of the World with my older kids, but have 4 more kiddos first grade and under. I would be SO EXCITED for a Catholic series.
I shared this post on my Facebook timeline! I’d love to win this set because I almost bought the Story of the World set to check out for my 3 little ones, until a friend posted about the Story of Civilization. We haven’t done much history study yet, as my oldest is 7, but I thought this would be the perfect way to introduce it!
Shared on my facebook timeline.
I would like to win because we will be covering this period of history next school year with Catholic Schoolhouse Year 2.
I shared with my FB friends, many of whom homeschool. I would love to win this package because my daughter will be entering 6th grade next year and is set to learn about ancient civilizations. This product appears to be fun, and interesting.
I shared on FB. My daughter will be studying ancient civilizations next year. This program looks interesting and fun.
I’m dying to try this series! As a new-to-homeschooling mom of a 6yo, with at least one more (4 yo) coming along, and as a recent convert to Catholicism- my history needs some refreshing! I shared on my fb page and in my catholic homeschool group page… Hope I win ?
I just posted to my local catholic Homeschool group on FB! I am excited to win this freebie because history is a passion of mine. I have not found a curriculum that I have enjoyed. I will be teaching a Kinder and a 3rd grader this coming year and we have another on the way. The long term potential for our family is huge and I would love to own something that is Catholic and complete like this seems to be. 🙂
I shared this in my local Catholic home school group. I would love to share with my children an engaging history of the world from a Catholic perspective!
1) I shared it in a CM-inspired Baby Steps group I am in on FB
AND
2) I would LOVE to win because reading together is the “love language-study language” of my children and me, we all enjoy reading history together, and having a Catholic outlook for it as a spine would be AWESOME! A dream come true, really.
“Why do you want to win the complete set of The Story of ”
OPTIONAL additional question:
I do not have audios from the prior series but will say we LOVE, LOVE, LOVE audiodramas in our home as something to listen to in the minivan or at home (bedtime or choretime).
I would love to win this to use with my soon to be 2nd grader and 4th grader. I’ve been looking for something I love for history and I think this is it!
Do these books have an imprimatur or nihil obstat?
We’ve done Story of the World in the past and I really liked it, except the parts where I had to tweak it to correct historical inaccuracies about the Church. I’m the history teacher for our small homeschool co-op and I’d love to give TSOC a try with my students next year. 🙂
Also, I have The Story of the Bible (OT) audiobook. We listen to a story together most mornings and it has been great for getting our family discussing the Bible together. Love it.
(Posted about the review on my FB page, California to Korea. :))
My kids LOVE the Story of the Bible. I bought it because of my reluctant readers. I am so excited about this new product !! I think it will help my kids be excited about Catholic history .
I’d love to win this as my children are learning about ancient history currently. I have one daughter especially who loves history but I have a difficult time finding sources with accurate depictions of the Catholic Church.
I shared this giveaway/review on my facebook page.
I would love to win Story of Civilization for my sons. I will be doing first grade at home this fall and believe that it would be a perfect catholic history program for my boys. Thanks for the opportunity to win! I shared it on facebook if I didn’t already post that information.
Shared to our Catholic homeschool group in Melbourne, fl. This would make the perfect addition to our RC History studies
Shared on my facebook timeline. We use Classically Catholic Memory as part of our curriculum, and this history would be a great addition to the memory work we will be doing!! I hope we can use it every year…I just wish it would come out a little faster 🙂
I would LOVE to win “The Story of Civilization”! As a homeschooling mother of seven, combining children for history makes life easier. 🙂 I have used Story Of The World and enjoyed it but I would love to have a solid Catholic curriculum.
I shared this in The Catholic Homeschool Network-ND. 🙂
Just finishing our first year homeschooling and would love to have everyone work together for history. Looking forward to checking this out! (Shared on FB)
Would love to win this and use next year for homeschooling my boys. I posted to my Facebook page also
I would love to win this. History is my favorite subject and I want to my love of it with my children.
I would LOVE to win this complete package for two reasons (a) even though it is under $200, it is still out of our reach financially and (b) I would LOVE to have a complete history course that is tied in to the Catholic religion. It would make more sense for my children (and myself). Thank you for this opportunity!
Posting this to FB.
We are currently using Story of the World and I would much prefer a Catholic version. I have four boys and the video lecture portion really appeals to me. My kids are very visual.
I want to win this set because my children really enjoy audio dramatization. While I enjoy reading aloud, it can get overwhelming after awhile. But more importantly, I have been searching for a series just like this! I am so excited it is being released.
Sharing on Facebook and I’d love to win because it’s hard to find a good, solid history curriculum- this sounds good for that!
I shared the giveaway on my blog Facebook page.https://m.facebook.com/veilsandvocations/photos/a.980488705300174.1073741828.874689432546769/1139564226059287/?type=3&source=44&ref=bookmarks
I shared this info with our Yahoo Support Group, ARCH11, and shared on Facebook page, thanking Catholic Sistas in the comments section. I really want to win this program b/c I have been hoping that some authentic Catholic publisher would have a Story of the World style program — which works. So, I know this IS the program worth starting and awaiting the next year’s Middle Ages program to continue through high school! Thanks again! God bless you and your ministry.
Through homeschooling, our family has found a common and deep interest in learning history. My husband and I feel cheated in our history classes from childhood and love that our kids are learning history in a way that they not only retain the information but love listening to and reading about it. We’ve been using SOTW, but got to a point where we were tweaking too many sections. We’re overjoyed that TAN has made this available!
I will be sharing on Fb! I would love to win this because I have been using SOTW for years and would love to finally have a Catholic perspective in my elementary history without having to edit SOTW. LOVE IT!
Hi! I shared this post via email to friends & family who homeschool. I would love to win the complete set of The Story of Civilization, Volume 1 – The Ancient World because we are returning to homeschooling next year and the timing is perfect! Plus, my kids love history presented in this way.
I shared to my FB page!!!
I’m so excited about TANs new books! I have yet to find a good core/spine history book for my younger kids that’s Catholic! I refuse to use the Protestant books due to negative messages about the church or lack of information about the positive influence of the Catholic Church. We use the Catholic textbook project books but they are geared towards older kids and are not in a storybook format. It’s for these reasons that I would love to win this set of books/audiobooks/lectures! Thanks for hosting this giveaway!
From what I’ve seen online this is a great series and it would fit perfectly into our plan for next years history lesson.
I pinned it!
I shared on my FB timeline, too. So excited about this.
“Why do you want to win the complete set of The Story of Civilization, Volume 1 – The Ancient World?”
My answer: I’ve been waiting for this new release to use with my upcoming 7th grader. He will be doing the 2nd year of studying ancient history. While we did OK this year, we’re eager for something more interesting and enticing.
I have also heard wonderful things about the author and feel it’s a trustworthy source.
I would love to win this because it sounds perfect for my history-loving son! We’ve had issues in the past with history books not being very historically accurate regarding our faith so this is excellent! Thank you for the opportunity.
Thanks for the review, Martina. Our homeschool co-op is hoping to use this series for our history course! I would LOVE to own all four volumes (like NOW please!! Ok, I’ll try to be patient . . .). Starting with Volume One set would be really awesome. Thank you for the opportunity! I shared on my facebook page!
I would like to use this in our homeschool! 🙂
Is there anywhere to preview the items? You know, for if I happen not to win…lol.
Shared on Facebook.
We could use a history component as we set out to begin homeschooling next Fall. 🙂
shared on facebook. this would be a wonderful addition to our homeschool! We use Catholic Schoolhouse.
I would love this! Have my eye on SotW, but this is so much better! Shared on fb, Google, Twitter and email! Crossing my fingers win!!!
Shared via Facebook! Thanks for the opportunity to win! <3
(Shared on Facebook.) I hope to win the giveaway because I’m super excited about this history program and its Catholic framework. Can’t wait to introduce it to my 7yr old son!
I shared this giveaway on Facebook. I would be so excited to get a copy of “The Story of Civilization”, because we will be starting a new take on teaching/learning history next year in our home where all the kids will be studying together. We are starting with Ancient History and I am still searching for a well-put-together CATHOLIC back-bone. This would be perfect! Thank you!
Share on facebook and email list.
As a new homeschooler I would like to introduce my daughter to to ancient history with the Story of Civilization Set.
Shared in our homeschool co-op group 🙂 We are studying the ancients next year and would LOVE to use the TAN “Story of Civilization!”
I have been looking at a history program to use with homeschooling for over a year. When I saw this one come out I was so excited! A great Catholic program for multiple ages! I love it!
I need something that I can use for all my kids that doesn’t require me to real a million different books. This looks perfect.
We have used and LOVED Story of the Bible for long road trips.
I shared on my Facebook page. I would love to win this because a Catholic history for younger kids has been really lacking especially something for a broad age range well laid out and multimedia.i have a 4 and 9 yr olds who could use it. Of course the 4 yr old would be later unless he watches e video.
Sharing to our local Catholic homeschool group (HFH in Madison, WI)! My son loves SOTW but I’m not great with history enough to recognize what’s biased or missing. I’d LOVE a Catholic alternative to use with our whole family!
I shared on Facebook! To answer your question, I would love to have this set to help keep history cohesive for all my kids (grades k-8) and manageable. There’s other multi grade histories, but they can easily get overwhelming.
I shared ok Facebook. I would love this because to educate myself as much as my homeschooled children. I always thought history was boring and consequently there are huge gaps in my knowledge of it. We have a Protestant history book, but are so excited there’s a faithful Catholic one to use now! What a great resource.
I put this on facebook and twitter. I have never found a history program I was 100% happy with, but I have heard great things about this program, so I would love to win it and give it a try with my 6th grader next year.
1. I shared this on my FB page.
2. I have always wanted to see a Catholic version of SOTW. I have never bought that because I guess I was holding out for something more. I would love to win this, as I have a 5th and 3rd grader and would like to delve into history more with them.
1. I shared on FB.
2. I would like to win this because I have always wanted to see a Catholic version of SOTW. I have two boys 5th and 3rd and they would love to learn more history and this would be a great way to do it!
With 4 little ones, I love the schoolhouse model. A Catholic version saves me from having to look up other questions when contrary viewpoints arise.
We would love to win this set because we are following the Classical model for our humanities studies, because my sons respond enthusiastically to learning through narratives, and because we are eager to find an updated and faithful history text that will help guide our sons’ intellectual and spiritual development. I have loved everything I’ve purchased through TAN, and am really excited about this new curriculum.
We have been doing Mr Campbell’s classes through Homeschool Connections, and my son LOVES him. I’m excited to get my hands on a copy of this and share Mr Campbell’s teaching with all of my boys and do a more “family” history class.
I shared on FB. 🙂
I shared this on my blog – Bear Wrongs Patiently.
I would love to win because I am in need of something with a Catholic perspective for teaching world history. I refuse to use SOTW, so this is just perfect!
I shared your review on my local Catholic homeschool groups Facebook page (BNCH- Bloomington/Normal catholic homeschoolers)
My kids really liked Story of the World, but due to it being Protestant and problematic content in some areas we had to discontinue using it. I am so excited that this will be available! My kids are young enough to appreciate it now as well as use it again after going through the four your cycle. Winning a copy would be very beneficial to our budget!
Thanks for the thorough review and giveaway. I’ll be sharing this with my local Catholic hsing friends. :). We plan on purchasing this to use this fall with my family, and would be tickled to receive the set for free!
I would LOVE to win this! I’m a homeschooling mom of 4. 2 of my 4 have ADHD and Dyslexia. Because of our reading challenges, the Audio SOTB has been God sent. I love TAN books!
Shared on my Facebook Mary Barbara.
I wasn’t happy with Story of the World due to inaccuracies (having a background in history, with degrees in archaeology, I’m picky about the history curriculum for my kids). This sounds great, and I’d love to use it.
This history program sounds wonderful! I have purchased textbooks and workbooks from at least 3 other publishers (all Catholic), but have never found the right “fit.” I recently started making my own lessons, pulling together various books. I like doing this, but do not have the time to really do it justice. I would love to win this history package!
(Shared on FB on my timeline)
I shared this post on my Facebook! I would love to win because we currently use Story of the World in our homeschool, but I would love something Catholic. I’m so excited for this series!
This is such a wonderful idea, & I would be delighted to have these resources–history is one of my favorite subjects to teach but it is so difficult to find something engaging. We’ve used Story of the World & really liked it, even though correcting some of the teachings about the early Church & Catholicism was aggravating (& time-consuming!) However, the format really resonated with me & my kids, so we kept using it. We’re taking a couple year break from SOTW as we’ve been focusing on U.S. Gov’t & History, but by the time we’re ready to start with Ancient History again, I hope to start with this Catholic series. My oldest is now too old for this particular curriculum, but listening to it will be good review for him (plus, he has 7 younger siblings who can still benefit from it.) Just shared this in Catholic Relaxed Homeschoolers.
I’d love to win for my family because my kids do best with audio learning. I’m just getting started homeschooling this year & have been choosing curriculum that is 100% Catholic & faithful to the Magisterium. History can be a daunting subject in this capacity so I’m thankful that TAN has put this together! Thanks for the opportunity!
Would LOVE to win this! I used “A Child’s History of the World” last year with my daughter and we loved it for ancient history. However, this year doing the middle ages I’ve stopped using it since it’s so biased and anti-Catholic. I was searching for something else to use and am very interested in this!
I pinned this to my board and shared on Facebook.
I am sharing this post via email to homeschooling friends. I’m excited to see a Catholic alternative to Story of the World, and am especially interested in using a curriculum that can span a broad age range!
I shared this to our homeschool group email loop and our Catholic Women of the Chapel FB page. We are about to complete our 5th year of homeschooling and use Classically Catholic Memory which would dovetail wonderfully with TSOC. We currently use Story of the World -which is really a great curriculum (presenting history fairly is a tough gig) and was the only one of its kind for history, until now! It would be great to have a solidly Catholic narrative history series (especially during the Middle Ages!). Thank you!
Shared (emailed) to some homeschooling moms at our local parish.
This looks so wonderful. I have Story of the World Vol.1 but never invested or went further with future volumes b/c a friend had told me it was decidedly not including a Catholic perspective. Particularly as it gets in to the later volumes!
After 6 years of homeschooling and keeping each child’s curriculum separate, next year will be the first year I’m combining a lot of subjects for my 5 school kids, grades K-6. This is a perfect solution for our schoolhouse-style history for the whole family! Even the little ones under school-age can enjoy. Shared on my FB.
Shared on facebook and in my co-op! We were actually just talking about this set last week! I am pretty excited about this new option for Catholic homeschool families and would love to win the complete set of The Story of Civilization. I read Story of the World in my homeschool and am excited that Phillip Campbell put this together!
These would be perfect for my son who is going into second grade. I have heard over the years how wonderful Story if the World is, and I am excited to have a Catholic alternative. Shared this giveaway over at my Facebook page for my blog.
I shared this on our Catholic Schoolhouse page. I would love to win this because I am a convert to Catholicism and used SOTW in the past. It would be awesome to be able to have a similar history curriculum that approaches it from a Catholic perspective and not have to “tweak” things I’m teaching my kids.
I shared this on Pinterest and Twitter, and I will probably email my sister-in-law and mother about it. I would love to win this to replace the protestant history lessons in the classical homeschooling curriculum I’ve been using. I’m really excited about this!
I’m hoping to find a history program that is less text book and dates oriented but still manages to cover the important things…without making the Church sound like crazy heretics! I shared this to our Catholic, Military and Homeschooling FB group
I shared this on FB and with homeschooling friend in LA. We have been using various old Catholic school texts for history along with MP books. I would love to have something to use across ages (mine are 12, 10, 7, 4, 2 and 4 mos). I was so excited when I first came across this on TAN’s website. Honestly, I would love to win this because we couldn’t afford to buy it otherwise.
Shared on Twitter (https://twitter.com/The_Phil_Wife/status/732894513224683520).
I’d love to win this because I’m a homeschooling mom and this would be perfect for my rising 2nd grader. 😉
I would love to win this package, as I am brand new to homeschooling and don’t know where to start – there are so many resources out there, but this one seems perfect!
(I shared this via email list)
Is the activity book reproducible or would each child need his own?
Good question, Maureen. I didn’t receive that booklet to review, so I can’t say for sure. Try shooting TAN Homeschool a message on their FB fan page and see if they can answer that question for you – definitely share what you find out, too!
Shared this via email. This would be a great addition to our homeschool!
I would love to win the package! We will be starting ancients this falls so this would be perfect for our family. We listen to the Story of the Bible in the van. My kids beg to listen to it. My husband and I love it, too.
I’m sharing this on Facebook.
I tweeted about this on Twitter. I would love to win this! We are using Year 2 of Catholic Schoolhouse at home right now, and this would go along with it perfectly. I’ve recently starting switching things up in the way I approach our homeschooling, and have been getting great feedback from my kids. This would fit into things so nicely. I’ve already blown our new materials budget for the year, so I will have to wait a while to buy it…lol!
Shared with friend by email and also posted on facebook! Thanks for the giveaway!
Forgot to say why I’d like to win. I’ve been really hoping for a Catholic alternative to Story of the World. My children greatly enjoyed the first volume of that series (and actually so did I), but I haven’t been comfortable continuing due to the slants in what I’ve heard comes in following volumes. So, this would be perfect for our family!
I sent a link to this review to several moms with whom I am starting a Classically Catholic Memory co-op this year. I think the Story of Civilization would be an awesome complement to the timeline and history components of CCM. I also like that it will include a Catholic worldview of history and be great for my WIDE age range of kids. Thanks for the review (I would love to win a set)!!
