Holy Spirit Cupcakes

Holy Spirit CupcakesApril is the month of the Holy Spirit, and on it’s heel comes Pentecost Sunday wherein we’ll observe the feast of the Holy Spirit settling on Apostles and Mary in a real and very manifest way. Tongues of fire!

In keeping with so much focus on the Holy Spirit I’ve brought you a fun and easy way to bring some celebration into your home in keeping this theme.

I put a fun surprise in these cupcakes as well: fire within!

A pocket of “fire” hides inside these cupcakes as a symbol of the fire within us—The Holy Spirit. You can color the cupcake batter, as I did, or you could put a strawberry inside, or even a spoonful of red berry jam. How fun is it to have hidden symbolism in a cupcake?!

Here is how I made these quick and easy cupcakes.

What you need:

  • One White boxed cake mix, plus ingredients according to box
  • One container of premade white frosting
  • Cupcake papers
  • Red, Orange and Yellow hard candies (Jolly Ranchers or something similar)
  • Red dye, or a red jam or strawberries
  • Parchment Paper
  • Skewer or toothpicks

You’ll want prepare your cupcakes according to the box instructions. Fill your cupcake tins, reserving about a cup of the batter for the red in the middle. If you are going to use jam or berries as the “fired within” you can skip this step.

Bake off your cupcakes.

While your cupcakes are baking, you can simultaneously work on your candy fire decorations. This part is super fun and easy. If you have older kids that want to get involved, now would be a good time as long are you are careful. Hot sugar can be very dangerous so proceed with caution.

Arrange on parchment paper on a sheet pan your hard candies by color.

The candy can go from melted to burnt very quickly. You want melted!  Carefully, while the candy is still  hot and easily manipulated, use your skewer to swirl the colors together. Set your pan in a safe place to let the candy cool. When it is completely cooled, you can break it up into shards. When your cupcakes are done, let them cool completely as well.

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.
