Election 2012 – Where do the Faithful Go from Here?
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host – by the Divine Power of God – cast into hell, Satan and all the evil spirits, who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
For wrath is in his indignation; and life in his good will. In the evening weeping shall have place, and in the morning gladness. Psalm 30:5
In light of the disappointing turn of events of last night’s election results I have garnered two core lessons:
This truly is a spiritual battle for our immortal souls
This is a cultural/educational opportunity
The strength of these two approaches crumbles when our faith life is separate from our daily life. The breakdown lies with our brethren who refuse to see Truth. It lies in our teachers who refuse to fervently teach Truth. And it lies with the Deceiver who has so cleverly served up the apple of temptation to so many gullible Adams and Eves of this time. Why are so many, so acquiescent to the hissing whisper of the sins of the flesh? Why do our pleadings fall on deaf ears? Can it be that we are still not relying enough on Him who is our solace? In Him Who is the Alpha and the Omega? When I search myself, I am forced to answer in the affirmative.
This is a Spiritual Battle for our Immortal Souls
Mankind is prone to self importance, independence, and ideals of democracy – even in spiritual endeavors. The Goliath that is the Culture of Death has grown strong and proud. Like David we must go in, not with worldly armor but with the Armor of God. Our fault lies in giving too much credence to the solutions of this world – the electoral maps, the editorializing, and the arguing with other God-fearing souls. Our true strength lies in God in Whom we find true recourse.
But they that hope in the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall take wings as eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31
This is a Cultural/Educational Opportunity
And in doing good, let us not fail. For in due time we shall reap, not failing. Galatians 6:9
And the just man shall hold on his way, and he that hath clean hands shall be stronger and stronger. Job 17:9
We find ourselves at a crossroad today. Where will we go? To Whom shall we run? If we answer this question with a worldly answer we are bound for more and more failures. If we try to take on the Procurer of the Death of Souls, without spiritual aid, we will lose – eternally. Today we are heartsick for our country, ashamed of our brethren, and disappointed in the ‘system’ that seems to have ignored all of our fervent efforts. We feel the sting of betrayal by those who should know better, who have been given the fullness of Truth and rejected it! But, instead of weeping and gnashing our teeth, let us unite with the Prince of Peace; our Lord; our Brother and look to Him for the plan in the battle ahead. He did not come to bring peace to this world…He came so that we would find our strength in Him!
They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. Psalm 126:5
Today, heartsick as I am, I resolve to pray harder; inform more fervently; love more deeply; and depend more fully on the Author of Life. We have much work to do both in prayer and in fraternal correction/education! Won’t you join me?
I can do all these things in him who strengtheneth me. Philippians 4:13

Thank you! My heart needed to hear this today. We must keep our eyes fixed upon Jesus.
Thank you Birgit, well said, compassionate and timely…we desperately need consolation in this time of true heartfelt suffering.
The people are in shock, especially, we, the faithful. But it is our faith that sustains us and always will and that we can know is truth.
We will join with you in praying harder, loving more deeply and depending on the one true Triune God to lead us through this valley of tears…
Peace & Hope
Thanks for these well written words Birget. More than once in your blog I found myself shaking my head yes, wondering at how you were able to put my thoughts (that seem to be stuck in my heart and brain on this dreary day) down so elegantly.
Birgit,
You are right. This is an opportunity. I feel inspired again. Thank you!! God bless you and all the Sistas!
I needed your encouragement today…pray, inform, love and depend. This is indeed what we must do.
Wonderful article Birgit!! I, too plan to pray harder and also make sure my kids and others around me always know the truth and always seek the truth. It is the only way.
Wonderful message for today. My first thought this a.m. Was I need to pray more intensely and more often for our country.
Great post. The word that kept coming to mind, and kept me awake from 3am on Nov. 7 was “Gullible.” As soon as I heard the election results, I thought that those who voted to keep our president in office were either gullible, extremely selfish, or both. I prefer to give people the benefit of the doubt.
The truly most discouraging and depressing information to learn is that once again, 52% of Catholics voted to support this administration.
Thank you so much! I needed to hear this today! And I love that picture/quote at the bottom!
Wonderfully put! Bravo!
I feel that Politicians, especially those who call themselves Catholic need to truly follow the churches teachings or be taught a lesson. Here is a petition that was started in regards to this:
