Fabulously Featured: California to Korea

Welcome to Catholic Sistas’ newest series, featuring some of our friends in the Catholic blogging world entitled Fabulously Featured which will run on Wednesdays. I have always wanted to introduce you to some new blogs to follow and support, but seriously lacked the time to put this together before now. In a Facebook group of fellow Catholic women bloggers, I asked ladies to answer some questions for this series, and they were all too excited to participate! I give you their answers in their own words. 🙂

CaliforniatoKorea

Today we turn our attention to California to Korea, which is authored by Micaela Darr. Her writing varies from homeschooling to the Faith and everything in between – there is something for everyone! She writes: I’m Micaela: wife to an amazing man, and mama to 5 children who bless me daily. Catholic, crunchy, fun-loving and friendly. I may be sassy & opinionated, but there’s room for all kinds around here. I hope you feel welcome.

Theme

I used to write mostly about our life in South Korea, but I transitioned to literature, homeschooling, and Catholic topics when we moved back in 2013.  I still enjoy the “mom blog” aspect though.

Inspiration/Motivation

I first began my blog before I knew anyone else in blogging.  I just wanted a way to share in-depth about our life abroad.  Over time I found that I enjoyed writing, but more importantly, I enjoyed the community aspect of blogging.  I’ve made new friends and strengthened old friendships simply by putting my thoughts down in writing.  I feel like it’s a way to start a conversation that can be continued later, either in person or in the comment section on the blog.

Favorite Element

I love the friendships I’ve made through my blog.  Hands down, that’s my favorite part of my blog.  But I also really like stretching myself and writing about topics that move me, struggles I’ve had and lessons I’ve learned.

Favorite Post

My most recent post called I’m pro-life because… tells a little bit about how and why I came to be fully pro-life.  Another post last year that meant a lot to me was called Playground Parenting and is about learning to see from another person’s perspective.

Balance

I’ve chosen to only blog at night.  I’m a bit of a night owl, so this works out well.  But also, I get really wrapped up in writing.  If I try to do it while my kids are awake, I get snappy with them, or my writing turns out less than stellar.  That said, it’s a personal choice, and some of my favorite bloggers are able to write in snippets here and there.  My advice to new bloggers is to remember a) Your blog is not you!  Don’t get your identity wrapped up in stats or any other supposed measure of worth.  And b) Write what you love, and find other bloggers who speak to you.  Make friends with them, encourage them, and ask them for advice.  Most bloggers love this type of interaction.

Audience

I feel like I have a few categories of readers: family and friends, blogging friends, and people who are curious about our life, whether it’s homeschooling or Catholicism.

Catch Phrase/Tagline

I don’t have a tagline, but maybe I should!  Something fun and sassy.  In the meantime, my catch phrase would be: “Take a deep breath; it’s going to be okay.”

Advice

If you want to start a Catholic blog, do it!  First, I encourage you to a) pray about it, b) find a blog you really admire and ask the blogger to give you some direct advice regarding what it is you like about his/her blog, and c) just start writing! So much of the time we are debilitated by perfection, when what the Holy Spirit wants is for us to step out in faith.  Finally, my last piece of advice is: in everything that you write, be charitable. You never know who is watching YOU as the example of what Catholicism is.
